This policy explains what personal information this website collects, why, and what your rights are. The website promotes the book I AM: How the Universe Comes to Know Itself by Patrick Hunter. It does not sell anything directly, does not use advertising or analytics tools, and does not set tracking cookies.
01Who is responsible for your information
The data controller is Patrick Hunter. You can contact the controller about anything in this policy using the contact form or at [postal address / privacy email to be added].
02Information we collect
When you use the contact form
- Your name
- Your email address
- The subject and content of your message
When you visit the website
- Server logs. Like almost every website, the hosting provider automatically records technical information such as your IP address, browser type, the pages requested and the time of the request. [Confirm the hosting provider's log retention period]
- Abuse prevention. When you send a message, a one-way scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address is stored for about two hours so the form can limit repeated submissions. The original IP address is not stored for this purpose.
- A session cookie. The contact page uses one strictly necessary cookie to protect the form against forged submissions. It is deleted when you close your browser. There are no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
We do not use analytics, advertising, social media tracking pixels or third-party font services. All fonts and images are served from this website.
03How we use it, and our lawful basis
| Purpose | Information | Lawful basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and replying to your message | Name, email, subject, message | Legitimate interests: responding to people who choose to get in touch |
| Keeping the website secure and preventing spam | Hashed IP address, server logs, session cookie | Legitimate interests: protecting the website and its visitors |
Your information is never sold, and it is not used for marketing unless you have separately asked to be told about the book's availability, in which case we will contact you about that only.
04Who we share it with
Your information is only shared with the service providers needed to run the website and deliver messages:
- The website hosting provider [name to be added]
- The email service used to deliver and store contact-form messages [name to be added]
If you follow a link to buy the book, you leave this website. Retailers such as online bookshops handle your purchase under their own privacy policies.
05How long we keep it
- Contact-form messages are kept for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry, and are normally deleted within [24 months, to be confirmed].
- Hashed IP addresses used for abuse prevention are deleted automatically, normally within two hours.
- The session cookie is deleted when you close your browser.
06International transfers
[If the hosting or email provider stores data outside the UK, describe the safeguards in place here, for example the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or an adequacy decision.]
07Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information held about you;
- ask for it to be corrected or deleted;
- object to, or ask us to restrict, how it is used;
- ask for it to be transferred to you or another organisation, where applicable.
To exercise any of these rights, please get in touch through the contact form. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, although we would appreciate the chance to resolve any concern first.
08Children
This website is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
09Changes to this policy
If the way this website handles information changes, for example if a mailing list or analytics is added, this policy will be updated first and the date at the top will change.
